Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at kim@bodylogicmedicine.ca if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Testosterone is the main male hormone (“androgen”) responsible for development and maintenance of male characteristics and sperm production. Low testosterone is diagnosed through a combination of blood testing and related symptoms. In Canadian labs, the normal testosterone range is between 8.5 – 29.5 units.

If your body is not producing enough testosterone, it can lead to a decrease in energy, sex drive, strength and many other symptoms.

Low testosterone may also be referred to as testosterone deficiency or hypogonadism.

The signs and symptoms of low testosterone can be broad and overlap with many other medical conditions. Some men do not show any symptoms.

The most common symptoms are a decrease in:

  • Energy and/or mood
  • Exercise tolerance
  • Ability to develop muscle
  • Ability to lose fat tissue
  • Concentration and/or memory
  • Sex drive or libido
  • Strength
  • Absence of morning or nighttime erections
  • Increase in body weight or fat

In very low cases:

  • Hot flashes
  • Decrease in body hair (distribution or growth)

Body Logic Functional Medicine offers a range of medical services for men including hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

HRT for men requires more than just prescribing testosterone and letting you go on your way. Properly managing testosterone replacement requires appropriate training and fine tuning of the body system so that you feel your best while on therapy. We will be looking at all of your hormone levels and other important aspects of your blood counts that need to be monitored. Treatment options also need to take into consideration whether a man is wanting to preserve fertility.

We offer all aspects of functional medicine management to our male patients. This includes general check-ups, urgent care visits, fertility assessments, specialist referrals, diagnostic test referrals, and cancer screening. We work on identifying and eliminating the root cause of your symptoms rather then just treating the symptoms. Common reasons men present to clinic include: anxiety, weight gain, fatigue, loss of muscle mass/strength/tone, erectile dysfunction, low sex drive, insomnia, and gastrointestinal symptoms such as gas, bloating, constipation and abdominal pain, etc.

We also offer IV vitamin therapy to help you feel your best, maintain your energy levels and keep your immune system strong.

Get Active

  • Exercise can help improve and maintain testosterone production. Aim for >150 minutes of exercise per week with a focus on >30 minutes of resistance training 3 times per week. An increase in muscle and decrease in body fat will help to maintain normal testosterone levels.

Drink Less

  • Alcohol has been shown to lower testosterone production.

Sleep Better

  • Getting good, regular sleep is importance for the production of testosterone and can help prevent low testosterone.

Eat Healthy

  • Maintaining a healthy body weight and consuming a nutritious, anti-inflammatory diet are important for maintaining healthy testosterone production.
